Young India Sports University to Launch by 2028, Boosts Hyderabad’s Olympic Ambitions

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has announced that the Young India Physical Education and Sports University (YIPESU) will be fully operational by December 2028. The announcement came during the unveiling of the Gachibowli Sports District and the university’s logo, an event attended by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha. This initiative is a significant step in the state’s efforts to revitalize its sports infrastructure and potentially secure Hyderabad’s role in India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of a robust sports policy, noting the absence of one in Telangana for the past 12 years. The new policy aims to establish comprehensive training institutions, academies, and the university itself, drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s ‘Young India’ newspaper. The Gachibowli stadium, originally built for the 2002 Afro-Asian Games and currently hosting eight disciplines, is set for a major upgrade to accommodate 22 disciplines along with advanced training centers.

Key Vision and Support

Chief Minister Reddy expressed his ambition for Hyderabad to be a central part of India’s 2036 Olympic bid. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting athletes, citing instances where sportspersons like Mohammed Siraj and Nikhat Zareen received Group I posts despite not meeting standard educational qualifications for such positions. This demonstrates a clear intent to prioritize and incentivize sporting excellence within the state.

PT Usha lauded Telangana’s initiative, emphasizing that the university would be a cornerstone for sports development in the country. She highlighted the need for a holistic ecosystem involving coaches, teachers, trainers, medical staff, and strong institutions to foster young talent. Her message to aspiring athletes focused on dreaming big, working hard, maintaining discipline, and perseverance.

New Initiatives and Athlete Recognition

Beyond the university, several other initiatives were unveiled. These include the Physical Literacy Mission, the Young India Sports Fellowship, and six new academic courses related to sports. The state government also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Aditya Mehta Foundation to launch a national talent identification program specifically for para-athletes.

In a gesture of recognition and encouragement, the Chief Minister presented cash incentives to several accomplished sportspersons. Shooters Esha Singh received Rs 3.3 crore, Dhanush Srikanth Rs 2.1 crore, Tanishq Muralidhar Rs 53.65 lakh, and Surabhi Bharadvaj Rs 10 lakh. Boxer Nikhat Zareen was awarded Rs 60 lakh, and para-athlete Jeevanji Deepthi received Rs 50 lakh. These incentives underscore the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and supporting athletes financially.

Hosting Major Sporting Events

Further demonstrating its commitment to sports, Telangana will host the eighth Khelo India Youth Games and the National Inter-District Athletics Championship later this year. These events will provide significant platforms for young athletes and contribute to the state’s growing reputation as a sports hub. The revamped Telangana Olympic Association (TOA) building at LB Stadium was also inaugurated, following the unveiling of a statue of hockey legend Dhyan Chand.
