Hyderabad: The one-way traffic loop around KBR Park, introduced about 10 days ago by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), is showing early signs of reducing congestion, though commuters have flagged lingering confusion at several junctions and slowdowns during peak evening hours.

Motorists using the stretch daily report that while the detour adds a few extra minutes to their journey, the elimination of stop-and-go traffic and frequent signal halts has made the drive significantly less stressful. Auto and cab drivers, who navigate these roads for most of their working day, have been among the first to notice the improvement.

Despite the overall positive reception, specific points along the loop remain tricky for drivers. Auto driver Srisailam said he faced no confusion at KBR Junction but was unsure at the Study Circle whether to head towards Indo-American Cancer Hospital or take the parallel stretch to Maharaja Agrasen Island.

Commuters from Film Nagar and Jubilee Hills reported confusion while proceeding towards Jubilee Hills Check Post metro station. “Many vehicles suddenly proceed either towards Chiranjeevi Blood Bank or towards KBR junction, creating uncertainty here,” said Rameshwara Rao, a regular commuter on the route.

These moments of hesitation, especially during lane changes, have been flagged as potential safety concerns. Several motorists have called for clearer signage or markings at these points to reduce last-minute swerves.

Peak-hour slowdowns remain

While daytime traffic has improved noticeably, the evening peak period from 7 pm to 10 pm continues to see slowdowns. Commuters reported congestion mainly near the Indo-American Cancer Hospital, Maharaja Agrasen Island and Film Nagar. The reasons for these bottlenecks are not yet clear, but the combination of lane changes and high traffic volume during these hours appears to be a factor.

Some drivers have suggested that GHMC should have first implemented the one-way loop and then proposed the larger H-CITI Project, rather than launching both initiatives in quick succession. The H-CITI Project is a major urban mobility plan for Hyderabad, and some feel the one-way system should have been allowed to settle before adding further changes.

For residents of Jubilee Hills, Film Nagar, Banjara Hills and surrounding areas, the KBR Park loop is a daily route for work, school runs and errands. The early feedback suggests the one-way system is a net positive, but the confusion at key junctions and evening slowdowns need attention. Clearer lane markings, better signboards and possibly temporary traffic wardens during peak hours could help smooth out the remaining rough edges.

The GHMC has not yet released an official assessment of the loop’s performance, but commuter feedback will likely shape any adjustments. Drivers are advised to stay alert at the identified confusion points and allow extra time during evening hours.
