Hyderabad experienced widespread disruption on Friday as intense monsoon showers led to significant waterlogging and traffic chaos across the city. The downpour, comparable to the heavy rains recorded on June 9 when the southwest monsoon first arrived, saw several areas receive over 40 mm of rainfall within a few hours. This resulted in considerable inconvenience for evening commuters and severely impacted vehicular movement during peak hours.

Rainfall Highlights

According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TDPS), Mailardevpally in Rajendranagar recorded the highest rainfall with 45.3 mm. Other significantly affected areas included Golkonda (44.8 mm), Shastripuram near Ekta Colony (42.5 mm), and Rajendranagar ARS (42.3 mm). Kishanbagh Govt High School also reported 40.5 mm of rain, while Sivarampally and Chandulal Baradari Sports Complex received 38.5 mm and 36.5 mm respectively. These figures highlight the intensity and localized nature of the rainfall across various parts of Hyderabad.

Key facts

Area Rainfall (mm)
Mailardevpally 3
Golkonda 8
Shastripuram 5
Rajendranagar 3

Impact on City Infrastructure and Commuters

The heavy showers led to the inundation of several key roads, exacerbating traffic problems. Waterlogging was reported at the SR Nagar–Balkampet Road Underbridge (RUB), near Mehdipatnam Function Hall, and on the stretch from NFCL towards the Panjagutta Flyover. The area opposite Praja Bhavan also saw significant water accumulation, slowing vehicular movement. Further congestion occurred on the stretch from Masab Tank Junction towards Mahaveer, near the end of the Masab Tank Flyover. An uprooted tree near Vengalrao Park added to the disruption, blocking traffic flow from GVK towards NFCL.

Emergency Response and Forecast

In response to the severe conditions, traffic police, along with HYDRAA officials and Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, were deployed across affected locations. Their efforts focused on regulating traffic, clearing obstructions, and assisting commuters stranded by the thunderstorms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places over several Telangana districts for the next three days. For Hyderabad city specifically, the forecast for the next 24 hours indicates a partly cloudy sky with a likelihood of light rain or thundershowers and gusty winds in the afternoon or evening. Temperatures are expected to range between 38°C and 28°C.

This development is crucial for Hyderabad’s residents as it directly impacts daily commutes, public safety, and the condition of urban infrastructure during the monsoon season. Residents should stay informed about weather advisories and traffic updates before planning their travel.
