Hyderabad Monsoon Woes: Flooded Streets and Power Cuts Plague Residents

Hyderabad is experiencing significant challenges this monsoon season, with residents facing widespread street flooding and frequent, prolonged power cuts after just two spells of rain. Several neighborhoods, including Kukatpally, Miyapur, LB Nagar, Uppal, and parts of Secunderabad, have reported severe disruptions to daily life.

The issues became particularly acute following Friday night’s showers, which led to electricity disruptions lasting several hours. Many residents noted that these problems are not new, as repeated pre-monsoon showers in recent weeks have triggered similar outages, affecting households and disturbing sleep patterns.

Resident Concerns Mount

Ashfaq Ahmed, a resident of Masab Tank, highlighted the increasing frequency of power cuts. He stated that electricity in his area went off even before the rain began due to strong winds and was not restored until late at night. This pattern has left residents anxious about the duration of power outages with each new spell of rain.

K. Lavanya from Attapur recounted a particularly distressing experience where her home was infiltrated by floodwater during a power outage that lasted over four hours. The combination of no electricity and water seeping into her house created a difficult situation, especially for elderly family members who struggled through the night.

Life-Threatening Risks for Vulnerable Residents

Mahesh Yadav, an Abids resident, brought attention to the severe risks posed by these outages for families with elderly members or those dependent on medical equipment. His father, who relies on oxygen support, faces a life-threatening situation when heavy rains cause extended power cuts and simultaneous street flooding. Yadav emphasized that while power cuts might be an inconvenience for some, they can become a matter of life and death for others, raising questions about responsibility if an emergency arises.

Infrastructure Challenges and Official Responses

Officials from the Hyderabad Road Development Authority (HYDRAA) reported that 27 trees fell across the city during Friday night’s rain and gusty winds. These incidents caused traffic disruptions and property damage in multiple localities, contributing to the overall chaos.

The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) officials explained that most rain-related power outages occur due to trees and branches falling on overhead electricity lines. They stated that the company received approximately 200 complaints over the past two days and managed to address most of them within a few hours. Despite these efforts, residents continue to face significant inconvenience and safety concerns.
