Paying a Hyderabad traffic challan online saves you a trip to the traffic police station, but only if you use the correct portal and follow the right steps. Many drivers accidentally pay on fake sites or fail to confirm that their payment actually closed the challan. This guide focuses specifically on the payment process: what methods work, how to know your payment went through, and what to do when things go wrong.

The official website for all Hyderabad traffic challan payments is the Telangana Police e-challan portal at ectm.telangana.gov.in. No other website or mobile app is authorised to collect payments on behalf of the Hyderabad Traffic Police. If you land on a site that asks for extra fees or does not end with telangana.gov.in, leave immediately.

Payment methods accepted by the portal

The e-challan portal supports six common Indian payment options. Each works the same way: after you select a challan, the system redirects you to a secure payment gateway.

Payment Method Accepted Providers Transaction Speed Extra Fee
Credit Card Visa, Mastercard, RuPay Instant ₹5–₹10 convenience fee
Debit Card Any Indian bank (RuPay, Visa, Mastercard) Instant ₹5–₹10 convenience fee
Net Banking SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Yes Bank, others Instant Usually free
UPI Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay Instant Free
Wallet Paytm Wallet, Freecharge Instant ₹5–₹10 convenience fee
NEFT/RTGS Not supported N/A N/A

Tip: UPI is the fastest and cheapest option. If your UPI payment fails, the amount is typically reversed within 3–5 working days, but you should not attempt a second payment until you confirm the first one did not go through.

How to confirm your payment is successful

After you complete the transaction, the portal displays a payment acknowledgement screen. That screen includes a receipt number and a button to download the PDF. Download and save that PDF immediately – it is your only proof of payment.

However, seeing the green success screen does not always mean the challan is closed in the police database. The system needs 24 to 48 hours to sync. To be certain, follow these steps:

  • After 48 hours, go back to the portal and search using your vehicle number.
  • If the challan shows “Paid” or “Closed”, you are done.
  • If it still shows “Pending” or “Unpaid”, do not pay again. Instead, contact the Hyderabad Traffic Police helpline (040-23232323) with your receipt number and challan number.
  • Keep the receipt PDF at least until the next vehicle fitness test or when you sell the vehicle.

What to do if the portal rejects your payment

Payment failures happen for three common reasons:

The challan may have already been paid by someone else (for example, a previous owner or a traffic police officer at the spot). In that case, the system shows “No pending challans” after you search, even if you saw a challan earlier. That is normal.
2. Your bank or UPI app may block the transaction due to security settings. Try a different payment method (e.g., net banking instead of UPI) or contact your bank first.
3. The challan may be from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for parking violations. GHMC uses a separate system and their fines cannot be paid through the Telangana Police portal. Check the GHMC website for those.

If none of these apply and the payment still fails, wait 24 hours and try again. Do not use a third-party service that promises to “pay for you” – these are often scams that collect your card details or charge extra fees without actually settling the challan.

Three warnings about fake payment sites

Fake websites that mimic the official e-challan portal appear frequently. They often rank high in Google ads. You can avoid them with these checks:

  • The URL must be ectm.telangana.gov.in, not variations like ectmtelangana.com or hyderabadchallan.in.
  • The official portal never asks for your CVV or UPI PIN outside the payment gateway. If the site itself asks for these details, it is a phishing page.
  • The portal does not charge a “processing fee” beyond the small convenience fee listed above. Any site that asks for ₹50 or more extra is fraudulent.

If you accidentally entered details on a fake site, immediately change your bank passwords and contact your bank’s fraud support.

Official helpline numbers for payment issues

When the portal works but something still seems off, call these numbers:

  • Hyderabad Traffic Police helpline: 040-23232323 (24 hours, 7 days) – for challan status and disputes.
  • Telangana Police e-challan technical support: 040-27852277 (Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM) – for portal errors or payment receipt issues.
  • Email for unresolved technical queries: [email protected] (include your challan number and receipt number).

If you paid successfully but the challan remains “Unpaid” after 72 hours, email the receipt screenshot. Do not pay again.

What about challans that were issued but do not appear online

Some Hyderabad traffic challans are recorded on paper and take up to seven working days to upload to the digital system. If you received a physical challan slip (pasted on your windshield or handed over by an officer) but cannot find it online, wait a week before taking any action. After that, if it still does not show, visit the nearest Traffic Management Centre with the physical slip. Online payment is not possible for offline-recorded challans until they appear.

If the challan is correct and you see it after a week, follow the payment steps above. If the challan looks wrong (wrong vehicle number, wrong date, or an offence you did not commit), do not pay. Visit the Traffic Management Centre in person to dispute it. No online dispute mechanism exists yet.

Summary of direct next steps

  • Before paying, check the URL twice.
  • Use UPI for fastest and cheapest payment.
  • Always download the receipt PDF immediately after success.
  • Verify the challan status after 48 hours.
  • If it shows pending, contact the helpline, not a third-party service.
  • If you suspect fraud, call your bank first, then the traffic helpline.
