A 34-year-old NRI from Karimnagar was killed on Monday when a speeding private travel bus lost control and crashed into a hotel near Shamshabad, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The victim, identified as Muhammad Azeem, was on his way to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to return to Saudi Arabia after a vacation with his family.

The accident occurred on the busy Shamshabad stretch, a key route connecting Hyderabad to the airport. According to police, Azeem had stopped his car near a roadside eatery to have tea before proceeding to the airport. While he was walking back to his vehicle, a private bus operated by Seven Hills Travels, which was trying to avoid a container truck, lost control and careened into the roadside.

The bus first rammed three parked cars before crashing into Balaji Bhavan Hotel. Azeem was struck by the bus and died on the spot. His body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Several other persons sustained injuries in the accident and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest the bus driver lost control while attempting to avoid a container vehicle, but the exact circumstances are still under investigation.

The victim had been married for about 18 months and had a young child, according to family sources. He had returned to Karimnagar from Saudi Arabia to spend time with his family and was heading back to the airport when the tragedy struck. His death has left his family and the local community in shock.

What this means for Hyderabad readers

This incident highlights recurring safety concerns on the Shamshabad stretch, which sees heavy traffic due to airport commuters, intercity buses, and container trucks. For residents of Hyderabad and surrounding districts who regularly use this route, the accident underscores the risks posed by speeding private buses and poorly managed traffic around roadside establishments.

The crash also raises questions about enforcement of traffic rules on private travel buses operating on key arterial roads. While major roads near the airport are maintained by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, roadside safety measures such as barriers, designated parking zones, and pedestrian walkways remain inadequate in several sections.

For NRIs and frequent flyers from districts like Karimnagar, Warangal, and Nizamabad who travel to the airport via Shamshabad, the incident is a grim reminder to exercise caution at roadside stops and to remain aware of traffic conditions.

Ongoing investigation

Police are examining the bus driver’s record, the vehicle’s mechanical condition, and whether any traffic violations occurred. The bus operator, Seven Hills Travels, has not yet issued a public statement. Authorities are also checking whether the driver was speeding or under the influence at the time of the crash.

The injured persons are receiving treatment at local hospitals, and their conditions are not yet fully known. Police have urged witnesses and those with dashcam footage to come forward to assist the investigation.
