Nizamabad GGH to become referral hospital; super-specialty services, MRI on the way

Nizamabad Government General Hospital (GGH) will be developed as a referral hospital, with super-speciality services in cardiology, neurology, nephrology and urology to be introduced in a phased manner, Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarsimha said on Monday (August 3, 2026).

The Minister made the announcement during a review meeting with MLAs from Nizamabad district at the Secretariat in Hyderabad. He said the hospital would also get an MRI machine equipped with advanced technology, with MRI services expected to be made available to patients soon.

The meeting reviewed healthcare services and infrastructure across Nizamabad district, including the Government Medical College, GGH, Area Hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs), Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and sub-centres. The availability of doctors and other healthcare personnel, along with the progress of ongoing development works, was also reviewed.

Super-specialty services and MRI at Nizamabad GGH

The phased introduction of cardiology, neurology, nephrology and urology services marks a significant upgrade for the district hospital, which serves as a major government facility for northern Telangana. Patients from Nizamabad and surrounding districts who would otherwise travel to Hyderabad for such treatment are expected to benefit once the departments become operational.

The Minister said the hospital will get an MRI machine with advanced technology. No specific installation date was given, but he said services were expected to be available soon.

District hospitals to ease pressure on Hyderabad

During the meeting, Banswada MLA Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said elected representatives were receiving dozens of calls every day from people seeking beds at major government hospitals, including Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Gandhi Hospital, Osmania General Hospital and Nizamabad GGH.

“Strengthening government hospitals in the districts would help reduce the patient burden on major tertiary-care hospitals in Hyderabad,” he said.

The statement reflects the wider strain on Hyderabad’s tertiary-care institutions, which routinely take in patients referred from districts. Upgrading Nizamabad GGH into a referral hospital is expected to absorb part of that demand.

District-wide infrastructure review

The review covered the Government Medical College in Nizamabad, Area Hospitals, CHCs, PHCs and sub-centres. Officials also looked at staffing levels across facilities and the status of ongoing development works in the district.

Several constituency-specific healthcare demands were raised at the meeting. In response to a request for a PHC at Ankapur, the Minister said the facility would be sanctioned. He added that the government would examine proposals to upgrade the Nandipet PHC into a CHC and establish a Trauma Care Centre at Indalwai.

Specialist recruitment to be completed by end of August

The Minister said recruitment of specialist doctors in departments including General Medicine, General Surgery and Radiology would be completed by the end of August. Measures would also be taken to address shortages of doctors and other healthcare personnel across the district, he added.

Specialist vacancies have been a long-standing concern at government facilities in the district. Filling these posts is expected to strengthen the GGH as well as the wider network of area hospitals and primary health centres.

What remains unclear

The phased timeline for the super-specialty departments has not been specified. The Minister did not give dates for when cardiology, neurology, nephrology and urology services would begin, nor a firm timeline for the MRI facility beyond “soon”.

The funding sources and overall cost of the upgrades have also not been disclosed. The Nandipet PHC upgrade and the Indalwai Trauma Care Centre remain proposals under examination rather than committed projects.
