Hyderabad health authorities are closely monitoring a 35-year-old Sudanese national at Gandhi Hospital for potential Ebola virus infection. The individual, who arrived in Hyderabad on a medical visa for knee surgery, was flagged during routine health screening at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) after recording a temperature of 100°F.

The patient's travel history, which includes recent visits to Uganda and South Sudan within the last 21 days, prompted immediate implementation of Ebola surveillance protocols. He had flown into Hyderabad via Ethiopia.

Airport Screening and Hospital Admission

The Sudanese national landed at RGIA around midnight. Despite having no reported direct contact with a known Ebola patient, the combination of fever and his travel history led to his transfer to Gandhi Hospital for further evaluation. He was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of Thursday.

Dr. Vamshee Krishna, nodal officer for Gandhi Hospital's isolation ward, stated that upon arrival at the hospital around 3:30 AM, the patient's temperature had normalised. He had only reported experiencing a fever for the previous four days and did not exhibit other common Ebola symptoms such as vomiting, bleeding, or abdominal pain.

Testing Underway

As per established health protocols, blood, urine, and swab samples have been collected from the patient. These samples have been dispatched to the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) for comprehensive testing. Authorities anticipate receiving the test results within two days.

Dr. N. Vani, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, confirmed that if the test results are negative, the patient would likely be advised to undergo home isolation and monitoring. Should the results be positive, further treatment protocols for Ebola will be initiated immediately.

Measures for Fellow Passengers

Airport Public Health Officers (APHO) have identified fellow passengers who travelled on the same flight. These individuals have been informed and advised to self-monitor for any potential symptoms. Officials noted that the patient had minimal interaction with other passengers during the flight, as he had an entire row to himself due to the flight being largely empty. All other passengers were also screened upon arrival in Hyderabad. The APHO also confirmed that the traveller had flown directly to Hyderabad without any stopovers elsewhere in India.

What This Means for Hyderabad Residents

For residents of Hyderabad, this incident highlights the vigilance of public health authorities at the airport and within the city's healthcare system. The immediate implementation of surveillance protocols demonstrates the preparedness to handle potential public health concerns. While the situation is under close observation, there is no immediate public health alert for the general population. The existing health screening measures at RGIA are designed to identify and manage such cases effectively. Residents are advised to stay informed through official health advisories and continue to practice general hygiene measures.
