Sudanese National in Hyderabad Tests Negative for Ebola, Second Case Awaits Results

Hyderabad is carefully monitoring a public health situation after a Sudanese national, initially isolated at Gandhi Hospital due to suspected Ebola symptoms, tested negative for the virus. Telangana Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha announced the negative result on Friday, June 5th. This development comes as health authorities remain vigilant, especially concerning international arrivals.
The initial case involved a 35-year-old Sudanese national who arrived in Hyderabad early on June 4th on a flight from Ethiopia. During thermal screening at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the individual was flagged due to a fever and a travel history that included Uganda and South Sudan. The passenger had traveled to Hyderabad for knee surgery.
Second Case Under Observation
Following the first case, a second Sudanese national, a student in his 20s, was also referred to Gandhi Hospital on Thursday evening from a private health facility. Both individuals’ samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for testing. Dr. Vani, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, stated that the results for the second passenger are expected by Saturday, June 6th. Despite the first passenger testing negative, both individuals remain in isolation at the hospital, awaiting further instructions from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
Ongoing Airport Health Screenings
The Health Minister reassured the public that stringent health screenings for international passengers are continuing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. These screenings are being conducted in accordance with guidelines issued by the Central government. Passengers exhibiting symptoms are immediately transferred to the isolation ward at Gandhi Hospital, where samples are collected and sent to NIV for comprehensive testing.
Precautionary Measures
For international arrivals without symptoms but with a travel history from affected regions, authorities are advising home isolation for 21 days. Their health status is being closely monitored as a precautionary measure to prevent any potential spread. Last month, Hyderabad airport authorities had also communicated that passengers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected regions, including Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and other high-risk areas, might be required to complete a self-declaration form (SDF) before disembarking.
Understanding Ebola
Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease that affects humans and other primates. It is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, and muscle pain, potentially progressing to unexplained bleeding and organ failure. The virus is transmitted to humans from infected wild animals, such as fruit bats, porcupines, and non-human primates. Subsequent human-to-human transmission occurs through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as through contaminated surfaces and materials like bedding and clothing.
