An 18-year-old candidate appearing for the NEET re-examination in Hyderabad was apprehended on Sunday after being caught allegedly engaging in malpractice. The student was reportedly found using a mobile phone, hidden within a washroom flush tank, to search for answers during the crucial medical entrance test. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining examination integrity despite stringent security measures.

Incident Details

The accused, a resident of Achampet, arrived at the Zilla Parishad High School in Ragannaguda, under the Adibatla police station limits, around 7 AM. Police reports indicate he initially placed a mobile phone in a washroom ventilator, accessible due to its proximity to a school compound wall. Later, at approximately 11 AM, he entered the washroom and concealed the phone in a zip-lock cover before hiding it inside a flush tank.

Security Lapses and Detection

Despite multiple security checks, the hidden device remained undetected initially. Police security teams had reportedly inspected the premises twice—once at 6 AM and again at 11 AM—and conducted thorough frisking of all candidates at the entrance. The phone, strategically concealed within the flush tank, bypassed these initial checks.

During the examination, the student complained of stomach pain and requested to use the restroom. The washroom, described as the only common facility for the entire center, is situated a considerable distance from the main school building. Invigilators became suspicious when the student spent an unusually long time in the washroom. Staff members were dispatched to check, leading to the discovery of the student actively searching for answers on his mobile phone.

Investigation and Confession

Upon being alerted, a police team arrived at the scene and seized the mobile phone. A subsequent inspection of the device confirmed that the student was using Google to search for answers. Authorities noted that no other suspicious applications, apart from Instagram, were active on the phone. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the act.

Legal Action Taken

Following a formal complaint lodged by the school administration, the Adibatla Police have registered a case against the student. The charges have been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. The accused is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
